Achieving Your Goals: How Can You Play the Success Game (And Play it To Win!)?
Are you doing what you want to do? Making the money you want?
If not . . . why not? Joe Straczynski, more widely known as J. Michael Straczynski, had his first play produced when he was seventeen a sitcom produced when he was twenty one, and his first movie script sold when he was twenty four. He wrote so many articles for his college newspaper at San Diego State University that the paper was jokingly referred to as the “Daily Joe.”
Today the creator of the scifi show Babylon 5 is a widely recognized as a writer/producer who has received countless achievement awards, including two Hugo Awards and the Ray Bradbury Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. “Sure,” I hear you muttering. “Easy for you to say, Jack. If I was seventeen again, I guess I could make good decisions, show the same single-minded dedication, and get somewhere too.” No regrets, my friend. You don’t need to be seventeen. Whether you’re twenty, forty, or seventy, it’s not too late to discover the power within you and learn how to be successful. Here are the keys to success:
- 1. Joe knows his Core Desire; do you know yours? Variety called Joe Straczynski “a writer possessed.” He writes for ten hours a day every day except his birthday, Christmas and New Year’s.” Why? Because he set a goal? Because he practiced affirmations? No. He does it because, as he says, “I enjoy the hell out of it.” Joe writes because it’s his passion. You have to determine what your passion is.
- 2. Expect to confront obstacles. Once you know what your passion is, you may expect obstacles to fall by the wayside. Life doesn’t work that way. When he was a struggling young writer, Joe asked his mentor, writer Harlan Ellison, for advice. Ellison told him, “The reason your stories are being rejected is because you’re writing crap. Stop writing crap!” You’ll have your own share of discouraging moments. Be prepared to jump in, parry, jump back, re-strategize and jump back in.
- 3. Work smart, not hard. We’ll talk more about this in upcoming blogs, but be thinking about leveraging, and multiple income streams.
If you learn and follow these keys to success, you can make a life change and achieve your goals. Just remember what J. Michael Straczynski said: “Never follow somebody else’s path; it doesn’t work the same way twice for anyone. . . the path follows you and rolls up behind you as you walk, forcing the next person to find their own way.” Find your Core Desire, and make your own path.
