Seven Words to Change Your Life: Are You Waiting For Someone To Figure Out What You Want?

Her pride was also a liability, though, because it prevented her from asking for the help she needed.  She took a full-time job in an office, but she also signed on with a network marketing company to sell household products, with the intent of building that into a full-time business.  She liked the products and enjoyed selling them, but when it came to taking the next step in the company, she faltered.

“I know I need to sign people,” she said.  “In fact, I know some people who would do really great at this, and it would help them out.  They already use the products and they love them.”

So why hadn’t she signed anyone?

“I just can’t say it.  I can’t get the words out.”

We’re working our way through the Seven Words To Change Your Life right now, and the word for today is “Ask.”   Your friends and family may love you, and your colleagues may respect you, but that doesn’t mean they can intuitively sense what you need.  They have their own concerns and pursuits, and they can’t read your mind.

Most people aren’t shocked or horrified when someone asks them for something; they simply respond with a “yes” or “no.”  But many of those same people can’t get a request past their own lips.  How can you let go of this  aversion and get the words out?

• First, don’t fall prey to assumptions, even about yourself. Sit down and take the time to define exactly what your needs are.
• Once you know what you want, figure out how to express it precisely, so there’s no room for confusion or error. Practice if you need to, or write the words out.
• Be prepared to feel uncomfortable if you aren’t accustomed to making requests. It isn’t selfish or wrong to have needs or express them; it is the nature of humans to function as a inter-dependant community.
• Be ready to put your pride in neutral. Asking for candid feedback won’t help you unless you’re open to it. Directions won’t help you if you don’t take them. You can’t ask for solutions without exposing your problems.

Asking didn’t come easily to Marian, but her fierce determination drove her forward.  “I started with my sister.  I mean, it should have been simple.  We used to take naps together, for pete’s sake.  I figured out what I was going to ask for – could she host one party.  I had to practice saying it, and then I braced myself for her reaction.  I mean, she wasn’t going to hate me for asking or anything.  It was so hard!”

She was shocked to discover that her sister was actually a little hurt that she hadn’t asked before.  The sister hosted the party, and soon signed on with the company.  Buoyed by her success, Marian was soon able to build a successful business.  She quit her job and enjoyed the benefits of having a flexible schedule and passive income.

In 1943, Warren Buffet, aged 13, worked as a newspaper delivery boy and in his grandfather’s grocery store.  He knew his Core Desire early – make money – and enrolled at the Columbia Business school in order to learn from securities analysts David Dodd and Benjamin Graham.  He graduated with an M.S. in Economics in 1951.

Financial Freedom: Do You Know How to Research Your Investments?

Young Warran went on to work as an investment sales man, a securities agent, and then a partner in various firms.  In 1962, he became a millionaire.  In 2008, Forbes declared him the richest man in the world – dethroning Bill Gates for the first time in 13 years.

What does this have to do with you?

Two things.  First, Warren Buffet is another example of a kid without great prospects who made good.  If you’re doubting whether it’s possible, look again.

Second, Mr. Buffett teaches us to invest ourselves into our Circle of Competence.  Put your time, money and effort into arenas where you have knowledge.  In other words, if you’ve never bought a personal residence, never owned land, and have no experience with property management, you shouldn’t pick up a 400 unit apartment complex in foreclosure, no matter how good the price looks.

How do you create and bolster your Circle of Competence?  By sound research – due diligence.  Get good information from good sources, and act on it, and you will attain financial freedom.

Here are some guidelines to get you started:

• If you have a conversation with a friend or family member about your potential investment and you feel uncomfortable or defensive with their questions, you should probably do more research.
• Know the credentials of your source. Advice doesn’t mean a thing if it’s self-serving. Every time a stockbroker buys or sells for you, she makes money, whether or not it’s a sound financial move. The seller of the franchise you’re considering has his own agenda – his pocket book. Online advisors may be more interested in selling their services than giving the best advice. As Mr. Buffett said, “Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.”
• Be very leery of “hot tips.” Intensive research may sound daunting, but the hot tip short cut is rarely profitable.
• Don’t allow yourself to paint a fantasy by slanting your research so the risk is minimized and the benefit is maximized. It’s fun to imagine the day when the money starts coming in, but to make that day a reality, you need to be clinical in your assessments.
• This is no time to think positive. Look for the bad things – the hidden risks, instability factors, and unanswered questions that can turn an attractive investment opportunity ugly in a hurry.

I’ve said many times that making money is fun, and that just about anyone can do it!  You might have thought, “Sure, Jack, sure.  Then why isn’t everyone doing it?”  One of the reasons is right here.  Research is a challenge for a lot of people.  It requires patience and self-discipline to take that long look before you leap.  But  as I go on in these coming blogs to talk about the pros and cons of particular investments, please remember:  not one will succeed – not one­ – if you aren’t willing to prepare.

• Increase and Improve: Don’t stay stuck – look for opportunities or new products that can help expand your business. One way of doing this is to ask your customers how you can help them; if there is anything they would like that you can do to improve your product or services (and it’s never been easier to connect with your customers with all of the social media available today!) Improving or updating your current products and services will promote your business growth.
• Expand Territories: Opening new branches for your stores or buying other existing businesses can put you on the fast track to massive business growth. Take note that not every business is suitable to franchise, but it can also be an excellent source of growth for those that are.

Before anything else, you always want to make sure you have your current circumstances under control, since it will only make things more complicated to open up new stores and branches when you are struggling over your current budget, have problems with staff management, etc.

Finally, don’t take on more than you can afford or work on. Too much growth can be sometimes as stressful as lack of growth – something you always want to keep in mind on the path of starting your own business and continuing in growth.

I grew up on a Navajo Indian reservation as the only Caucasian boy in my class. Most of my classmates hated me – I was bullied and beat up almost every day. I was also too scared to fight back, causing my own father to reveal his disappointment in me again and again.

Is Lack of Emotional Maturity Keeping You From Success?

I was no good in school – I got bad grades, my teachers told me I was a failure and a troublemaker. I only passed my classes so my teachers wouldn’t have to deal with me anymore!

I became convinced that I was both dumb and a loser. College wasn’t even a consideration. I had no sense of self-worth or emotional maturity – nothing to indicate that I would ever do anything good or noteworthy.

But something happened that changed all that. It began with a chance encounter of a job offer as a karate studio manager when I was nineteen, and resulted in the revelation of my Core Desires. In the end, I didn’t have to let my past determine my future, because my real success came from within (and had nothing to do with outside circumstances).

As a human being, it’s natural for you to have the desire to be successful in order to enjoy your life in a more fulfilling manner. But when you haven’t achieved that kind of success, it makes you wonder – why does it seem like some people get everything they want without any effort at all? What are the qualities that they possess that you do not have?

The truth is there is no significant difference between you and those people. It is all in the mind – and it comes down to identifying your Core Desires – your real passions – and acting on them in such a way that uses what I call your Conquering Force to achieve success.

It is just not a cliché when people talk about the “power within” – come to think of it, you alone are the only one who can be held responsible for the way you live, and you alone have the capacity to change your world.

The mind creates negative thoughts easily, pushing up barriers and causing you to believe that you must remain stuck where you are. Giving in to this negativity prevents you from doing anything that can lead you to success – it becomes a vicious cycle that keeps you trapped.

Real emotional maturity that leads to success comes when you begin to identify your own barriers – whether it comes through self-examination or with the help of a mentor. Begin studying your own thoughts and observing the things you constantly tell yourself. What kinds of barriers are being thrown up in your path?

• I could never make that kind of money
• I’ll always be stuck in this job
• I can’t take those kinds of risks
• This always happens to me
• I’m too ugly to find a partner
• No one ever listens to me

On and on – if these are your thought patterns, you need to aim for a change.

Start to think about what you do want. What are you passionate about? What would you do if there were no limitations? Why would you do that particular thing? What is your greatest desire? Why? What would it mean if you attained the thing you most wanted?

As you ask yourself these questions, you’ll begin to start drilling down to what your real Core Desires are.

Don’t be afraid to take some time about it. In my years of mentoring people, I’ve seen the same thing over and over again – most people don’t know what it is that they really want. They might feel they know things on the surface, but the true Core of desire remains hidden – and it holds you back from really releasing your Conquering Force and being unstoppable.

Having clear focus gives you the confidence to be successful at any aspect of life, whether it be in your business, your relationships, your spirituality, or your leisure time – with confidence, you can take actions that will help you move forward and get you closer to success.

In the end, you must remember that success is not a chance, but a choice.

• Start implementing Stress Management.
• Surround yourself with positive reinforcement (and remove the negative influences from your life)
• Begin learning more from successful people that you look up to.
• Get new ideas and try new techniques.
• Start to get really clear on your core desires – the things you truly have a burning passion for – you’ll not only be able to push back negativity, but you’ll begin to be able to achieve the impossible!

There are many simple, but very effective ways to revive your enthusiasm towards your business and career and start making money and achieving success.

No matter how cliched it may sound, staying positive truly does make a big impact on the rest of your life. Managing your emotions will push your success drive right into happiness and wealth. So go out there and be positive!
