Did You Know That Goal Setting Doesn’t Work?

5

I stopped setting goals many years ago, and I still achieve everything I want at a very high level of satisfaction and joy in all areas of my life.

Everything I have accomplished, I have done without setting any goals.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Shoot for the moon, because even if you miss you’ll still hit a star”?

Did You Know That Goal Setting Doesn't Work?

Did You Know That Goal Setting Doesn't Work?

Well you know what?  When you’re setting a goal for something, you don’t want a star. You want the moon!

What if the Apollo astronauts set a goal to get to the moon, didn’t reach it, and decided on just settling for some star?

When you accept a star instead of the moon, you are going along with the idea that it is OK to settle for less than whatever it is you want.

Settling for less is simply not acceptable.

Goal setting is the most used (and yet most damaging technique) that has ever been taught.

  • Have you ever set a goal?
  • Did you write that goal down and read it frequently?
  • Have you noticed that many, if not most, of those goals you wrote down never happened?

If so, you are in the company of millions that have experienced this same phenomenon.
Goal setting doesn’t work.

Not only does it NOT work, but it’s negative and self-destructive for you.

Before you decide I’m crazy, think about the following:

When you look at your list of goals that you wrote down on a piece of paper and 8 out of 10 of them did NOT happen, how does that make you feel about you?

I have asked thousands of people this question, and you know what? I never hear any positive comments. Looking at that piece of paper and seeing all those goals you didn’t hit makes you feel just terrible!

So what about those 2 goals that DID come true?”

Well, if you think about it, that’s only a 20% success rate – not really something you want to write home about.
There’s actually a secret to those 2 out of 10 goals and why you are able to achieve them and not the others.
Have you ever succeeded at anything that you did NOT write down on your list of goals?

Of course! You do so daily! In fact, most of the things you accomplish, possibly even the most important achievements in your life, were probably never written down as a goal.

The goal setting gurus even admit that only two or three out of ten of the things you write down and call goals will happen, and you know what? They feel okay about that.

That seems kind of odd to me.  Nowhere else in the world is a 70 or 80% failure rate acceptable (in fact, it would get you fired from just about any job) but it sure is acceptable in goal setting!

Of course there was something there to make the other 2 or 3 happen that was missing for the other 7 or 8.
Do you know what that missing ingredient is?

I call it the Conquering Force and. It is that missing ingredient that will set you on the path, at last, to start achieving whatever you truly desire in life.

To conquer is to get what you seek or overcome obstacles by physical, mental, or moral force. And force is the power to act effectively and to move against resistance.

So, your Conquering Force is your innate ability to act effectively to get what you seek by overcoming all obstacles and resistance in your way.

This unstoppable Conquering Force already resides within you. Everything that you do, have, or become is a direct result of it.

It is the reason you have achieved anything of significance to date-including learning to walk, talk, tie your shoes, drive a car, swim, ski, play an instrument, or sing.

It is the reason you build houses, create computers, eradicate diseases, or put a man on the moon.

Everything that you achieve, at any point in your life, serves as evidence that you already have Core Desires and the Conquering Force within you.

You need to get the idea of setting goals out of your head and start to learn how to discover your Core Desires so that you can tap into the real power of your Conquering Force.

  1. Hi Jack. Interesting notion, “Conquering Force”. Reminds me of something that Napoleon Hill spoke about years ago … “Applied Faith.” Success is not just about having FAITH in your ability to achieve a goal, he said, it’s about actually APPLYING yourself in service of that goal. In this instance, one’s Conquering Force is much of what one applies.

But to your “Nowhere else in the world is a 70 or 80% failure rate acceptable” comment, what about weathermen and baseball players?!

(Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day!)
