We ALL have them. And, dang it, they are getting in the way of your success!

They give us birth; they love us from the moment they know they are pregnant with us.  And, even after the pain we cause them byour birth process they love us even more; they suckle and nurture us as babes: kissed and hugged us a lot as we toddled around; when we fell and got owies they made our hurts all better; they cared for us and worried about us all through childhood and on into ….well they never stop doing that do they? The good ones never give up on us even though we are sometimes real stinkers and not very thoughtful or nice. They love us any way and they worry about us no matter our age. I am 61 years old and I know my 87 year old mother still prays for me. I thank her for that.

Mothers are awesome! I am especially impressed with single moms! They are some kind of super being! To be able to juggle parenting, day care, a job etc all at the same time and all by themselves is remarkable. Hard. Yet they do it! Parenting is hard enough with both father and mother but being a single mom …boy oh man that takes strength! I so admire all single moms!

Sadly some mothers leave something to be desired. They can be helicopter moms, always hovering over their kids and not letting them learn to be independent. Watching or controlling everything they can. Some are overly protective creating fear or insecurity in their children. Some just won’t cut the apron strings which can create a “momma’s boy” or dependant adults who are always angry at their parents and want little to do with them.

Thank goodness the vast majority of mothers are really good people and they create awesome, happy children who grow up to be awesome, happy adults! I want to honor ALL mothers this Mother’s Day because, at a minimum, they gave us life. At a maximum they gave us the love, direction and compassion needed to help us create a life of our own and eventually children of our own. And the cycle of life continues.

I repeat, mothers are awesome!  So on May 8^th let’s all do something to show them we love them!

The point that they make is that if a person can get the courage to walk over hot coals, they have the courage and determination to achieve anything they wish in life.  I know many people who have walked over hot coals and were ecstatic when they completed their “fire walk”.

Those participating in this exercise buy into that faulty thinking and sincerely believe that if they can walk over the hot coals it’s proof that they are now equipped with the right attitude and can now go and do anything. This is simply not true.

Let’s see what science has to say about this. According to a brief article in the August 19, l993 issue of Newsweek, scientists discovered that it was virtually impossible to burn the soles of your feet if you “tripped the light fantastic” over a five-foot-long bed of wood coals. They’ve done so, using Band-Aids made of plastic and paper on the bottoms of their feet, and the bandages didn’t burst into flame or even singe after close exposure to the 1,200 degree burning charcoal. So the explanation is obvious–it isn’t the individual’s powerful mind control that is at work here. It’s merely elementary physics.

That’s why my research has shown that three weeks or three months later their lives have not changed one bit. They are still stuck but they can walk on hot coals.

You won’t be wasting your time when you understand the true cause of all achievement which is simply two things:

1)  Accurately identify your Core Desires…those things you want so badly it/they pierce you to the very core of your being. On a scale of 1 to 100 they are 100s.

2) Find somebody ( a mentor) who can show you how to make that Core Desire happen.

A friend of mine came to me one day and asked me to help her roommate. It seems she was dating a guy who was not good to her or for her. I had a reputation of being able to help people so I said. “Okay, I’ll see what I can do. What is her name?” She answered, “Marci.”

The foundation of all great relationships

It took a while but I finally got a date with this woman. It was a blind date and I didn’t care about looks or anything else because I was on a mission to save a friend not find a mate. When Marci answered the door and I saw her for the first time I have to admit, my mission changed in a heartbeat. She was beautiful!

On our first date we went to a Japanese restaurant called the Mikado. We ate a five-course meal in about an hour and then sat there for another five hours just talking. We opened up our hearts to each other and discussed things that really mattered. We both took a risk and shared everything including the not so good things about ourselves. We were totally open and honest. We didn’t play games. We accomplished as much during that six hour marathon dinner date as most do in six months or more of dating! That night we fell in love.

I had never felt so comfortable with a woman in my whole life. By the time the date ended she knew my fears, my failings and my doubts including being afraid she might not like what she was learning about me. She knew me inside and out and still liked me! She also shared the same things about herself. And we really liked that honesty. We trusted each other with our hearts and it paid off in a big way. I knew then, that I wanted her in my life forever! Within 30 days I asked her to be my wife and five months later we were married. That was 35 years ago. I have learned that night that trust is the foundation of all great relationships including business, sales, teaching and especially love relationships.

The experts say that if a goal isn’t written down it won’t happen…that it is merely a fantasy. But that is just not true. I got my fantasy named Marci.

Here’s the moral of the story and the crux of the message I have been taking to the world for over 20 years.

I did not have to go home and write down on a piece of paper and read it twice a day the ”goal” that I wanted Marci. That is because she was definitely a Core Desire! A 100 on a scale of 1 to 100!

I have never written down that I would be a professional speaker or author of a book either . Everything I have accomplished I did without doing any kind of goal setting program, which is why I began to doubt the veracity of the idea goal setting.
