I love Easter!
I especially enjoy the fun we all get to have with young ones. I love seeing their eyes get big and giant smiles splash across their faces as they see their colorful Easter basket chock full of delicious candy.
There was always a six inch or bigger all chocolate rabbit ready to be eaten standing prominently in the woven basket.
They all knew that it was not to be eaten until after lunch.
It’s fun to see them scramble for the hunt when we tell them that the eggs they colored the day before have been hidden all over the place just waiting to be found.
The excitement heightens dramatically when we tell them that there are three “special” plastic eggs with money inside them. We let them know that there is one with $1.00 in it, one with $5.00 in it and a GRAND PRIZE egg with $10.00 in it.
We started putting money in the eggs as the kids got older so their interest would stay high. And it always worked.
Then the hunters dash hither and yon looking in every nook and cranny, in lamps, under couches, in cupboards, in bushes, behind rocks. Squeals of happiness echo as they find one then another. When the GRAND PRIZE egg is discovered the squeal reverberates through the whole house!
Eggs, like rabbits, are fertility symbols. Since birds lay eggs and rabbits and hares give birth to large litters in the early spring, these became symbols of the rising fertility of the earth at spring time.
This is what Easter is really all about….i.e. new life….especially the life of Jesus Christ.
He freely gave His life that we might all live and then His resurrection (new life) on the third day… another gift to all of us.
