I agree, first look that you're well off and the new plans won't make your business suffer overall, so for small business owners to grow into medium-business or even large business, they've to make sure they keep on improving and look for ways to expand their business, either online or opening stores in a new place. But this theory applies to those who have enough capital to invest into a new place, one should not run out of resources to run their all stores for the sake of opening a new store, etc.

There are always room for improvement in business, make sure you're improving on that first and creating a reputation and brand name for your business.

The economic crisis sure did a number for businesses today. I agree that you must thoroughly conduct research and feasibility studies before venturing into business yourself.

Hi Jade,

Thank you for letting me know about this! I just wanted to get back to you so say I believe the problem is fixed now - please update me if this occurs again. My apologies!

I think the solutions for brick and mortar are along the lines of what David and Mark have commented - innovation and willingness to change/update are key! The ones who are going to suffer the most are the ones who remain stuck.

Thanks to all for your comments - great discussion!

Hi, I am a subscriber to your feed and am dropping in a note to say that the URLs to your posts in the feed are taking me to 404 pages.

As for the topic of your post, I'd also go for going online. Of the small businesses I know, the online ones are doing great at the moment, while the bricks 'n mortar ones are suffering.

yeah it is a structured methodology that is focused on completely understanding the customer's needs, identifying how best to meet those needs, and then "reinventing" the stream of processes to meet those needs. our purpose should be business process improvement (BPI) as a key strategy and a management tool, capable of supporting the organization's vision, mission, goals, and objectives, and to promote the use of technology throughout the organization.

It's an incredibly challenging time for many businesses right now. Ways of working that were great 18 months ago are no way to survive now. It takes imagination and a great deal of listening to customers to make it work. Customers are saying different things now than they were before. Their questions are different, as are their requirements. Fascinating, extremely challenging, difficult, tiring but there are still rewards to be had.
